Red Bend, an Israeli company, filed a law suit this week against the search giant Google with infringing one of its patents. Google allegedly uses Courgette, a Red Bend patented technology, to compress updates and send them to its Chrome browser. This patented technology is a compression algorithm that Google developed to shrink the size of updates in order to reduce bandwidth requirements for Google and its users, and also to reduce the potential for vulnerabilities as explained on a document page where it is describing the technology.

The suit, which is filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, also charges Google with publishing and distributing the source code for Red Bend’s technology. This charge has as its basis the fact that Chrome and the Courgette update system are open source.

Red Bend had filed for the patent in 1998 and was granted in 2003. The company claims that Google has known about the patent since September 7 of 2009. Because of Google’s prior knowledge of Red Bend’s patent and the continued use of it, Red Bend is asking for triple damages and attorney’s fees.

At present, Google is not commenting on the suit as they say that they have not yet been served with the suit.

Red Bend is a developer of software management products which are primarily used by the mobile phone industry. Their products are used by phone makers, operators, and software developers to manage and update their software on phones. Red Bend also has offices in Waltham, Massachusetts.
